Cold Plunge for Small Spaces, Apartments and Balconies
Specifications verified 2026-07-26

If you live in an apartment, the specification that decides your purchase is not temperature. It is footprint, chiller placement, doorway width, drainage and — the one almost nobody mentions — floor loading. A filled cold plunge is one of the heaviest objects most people will ever put in a residence.
We have pulled the actual published dimensions for the compact options below, including the chiller as a separate object, because the tub dimension alone will mislead you.

Prices and specifications were read from each manufacturer’s own product page on the date shown in each entry. Blank fields mean the manufacturer does not publish that figure — we do not estimate.
Weight is the constraint, not size
Ice Barrel publishes the number that makes this concrete: the Ice Barrel 300 weighs 61 lbs empty and roughly 700 lbs full at 77 gallons. Water weighs about 8.34 lbs per gallon, so a 130-gallon Redwood Alaskan approaches 1,100 lbs of water alone, and Plunge's 105-gallon tubs are near 900 lbs before you get in.
That load is concentrated over a small area. On a ground-floor slab it is a non-issue. On an upper-floor timber deck, a balcony, or an old building, it is a question for a structural engineer or your building management, and it is a question worth asking before the tub arrives rather than after. We are not going to tell you your specific floor is fine, because we cannot know that.
The smallest verified footprints
- The Cold Pod — 75 cm diameter by 75 cm high (about 29.5 inches across). No chiller, no power, deflates entirely for storage.
- Ice Barrel 300 — 35.5 inches wide by 30.5 inches high by 35.5 inches deep, 77 gallons. Upright, and chiller-ready if you want refrigeration later.
- Plunge Pop-Up — 32 inches high by 30 inches deep with a 34-inch top ring, about 95 gallons. Plunge's smallest footprint, plus a separate chiller.
- Cold Pod Elite Lite Barrel — rigid insulated barrel at $499.99, though Cold Pod does not publish its dimensions, so measure before you commit.
Where the chiller goes
This is the detail that ruins apartment installations. Inergize states that its Elite Tub is 53 inches long but the full setup with the chiller occupies 89 by 41.5 inches. Sun Home publishes its chiller unit as 21.2 by 15.7 by 21.7 inches. Ice Barrel's chiller is 18.63 by 16.4 by 20.4 inches.
A chiller needs airflow around it, hose runs to the tub, and a standard outlet — Inergize states 120V/15A at 890W for its Elite Chiller, Polar Monkeys states 110V/15A for the Brainpod. It also makes noise, which no manufacturer in our catalog publishes a decibel figure for. If you are sharing a wall, that omission is worth asking about directly.
Drainage and access
Small-space installations live or die on how you empty the tub. Ice Barrel sells the drain spout assembly for the 300 separately, which is a small cost and a large inconvenience if you discover it late. Any tub without a chiller and filtration will need draining regularly rather than occasionally, so a plunge that is hard to empty is a plunge you will stop using.
Measure your doorways before ordering anything rigid. The Ice Barrel 500 is 57.6 inches long, the Plunge All-In Gen 2 is 76.75 inches, and neither folds. An inflatable that arrives packed and inflates in place sidesteps the problem entirely, which is a genuine and underrated advantage of the Cold Pod, Pop-Up, Air and Sun Home Horizontal designs.
What we would put on a balcony
If the floor loading has been checked and there is an outlet: the Plunge Pop-Up or Sun Home Horizontal, both of which arrive packed and inflate in position. If there is no outlet: an Ice Barrel 300 run on ice, which leaves the refrigeration upgrade open via its 3/4-inch NPT ports without needing power today.
If the floor loading has not been checked: a Cold Pod, which at 85 gallons is both the lightest option and the cheapest thing to have been wrong about.
Frequently asked questions
- How much does a filled cold plunge weigh?
- Ice Barrel publishes about 700 lbs full for the 77-gallon Ice Barrel 300. Water is roughly 8.34 lbs per gallon, so you can scale from the published capacity — but confirm the empty weight with the manufacturer rather than assuming, since shell materials vary enormously.
- Can you put a cold plunge on an apartment balcony?
- Sometimes, and it is a structural question rather than a product question. Get the filled weight, check it against your building's load limits or ask management, and do that before ordering. No spec sheet can answer it for your building.
- How loud is a cold plunge chiller?
- No manufacturer in our verified catalog publishes a decibel rating. That is a real gap. If you share walls or the chiller sits under a bedroom window, ask the brand for a figure in writing before you buy.
